Nowadays, there are many possibilities to get more information about another country or culture. In my opinion, most of us try to get informations about the culture of a country if they want to go there. We use the internet, read travel guides and books or watch films about this country. The reasons for this preparation are, that we want to be sure how to behave when we are abroad, to have the feeling of safety and to know what habits we should expect there.
In my mind, the most important point to become open minded is, to get in contact with people who are different from you. That difference could be ohter opinions, religions, the colour of the skin, the age,...
You have to be interested in other people, speak with them and ask questions about their attitude. Further discussions can develop and you get to know more about, for example another culture.
What kind of questions can you ask in order to reach understanding of a known - unknown situation?To start questions when we are in other cultures is very important for our understanding.
Our group looked at three pictures of school situations in different countries. The picture of Eritrea was very far away from the classroom we know in Europe. We wanted to know, if the children have the same age, because we couldn't see it on the picture. In the first row there was a boy who had a school book in his hands. Do they have more of these books or only one? It seemed, that this school had not much money because they had no furniture and only walls out of wood.The picture of the danish class was more usual for us. It was hard to find anything which was unfamiliar. We wanted to know, why there were so many people in one room and why these people are all interacting.
On the picture of Laos, we saw at first the dog in the classroom. What is he doing there? Does he belong to the class or is there no door that animals could keep outside? Furthermore there were no windows out of glass. It could be that it would be to hot with glass windows. Are there windows out of wood? Is it, that the wind can blow threw the room?
